Giving Birth : Without The Fears

She did it! New mama in the birthing pool cuddles her newborn to her chest. Wrapped in a towel, the baby is pink and adapting to life 'outside'. This amazing Mama looks down adoringly at her little one.

“When you change the way you view birth . . .
The way you birth will change.”

~ Marie F. Mongan

In the West, we are immensely fortunate to have access to incredible medical technology - the progress of which is continually evolving.

Yet I wonder if, over the years, pregnancy and birth has become so medicalised . . . that it, actually, can only be considered a ‘normal physiological event’ retrospectively.

In fact, I can recall being asked this very question as I began my Midwifery training all those years ago - and not being totally sure of the answer!

However, the relevance became really clear, when, in the wake of personal tragedy, I spent some time healing myself in the remote landscape of Peru.

“. . . here, I was being shown an alternative way of mothering which was totally “normal” to these women who had  limited access to doctors or midwives.
This was their ‘normal’ and, as a Midwife in the UK, it really struck me how far our  “normal pregnancy” was from this innate, ‘trusting in our own bodies type’ of motherhood that I was being shown here.”

In the years that followed this life-changing trip, the ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘how’ of me has has changed beyond recognition.

Through experiencing and studying a variety of therapies and healing modalities, I have learned, on a much deeper level, about our incredible bodies, our minds . . . and how we can work with both to create powerful shifts in our wellbeing and, most importantly, in our lives.

And, it is all of this, combined with my midwifery knowledge and experience, that forms the foundation of my coaching practice where

  • I get to work with Mums-to-be who want to make their journey through pregnancy unencumbered by the fears and beliefs that could get in the way of them experiencing this ‘life changer’ in their own unique way.

  • And I love that I’m able to share all of me and my incredible skills with these wonderful souls   . . . being their coach, healer and guide ~ witnessing those “aha” moments as they discover a deeper connection to themselves, to their wholeness and wisdom whilst building trust in their bodies as they prepare for their transition into Motherhood.

Woman strides across a sandy beach, she leaves her foot prints in the sand. There is a sense of purpose and confidence as she appears to move towards her future.

And change is good . . . on the whole.

But it can definitely throw up a few fear-based challenges along the way.
And these can be unsettling, to say the least.

And of course, pregnancy is meant to be a happy time - or so those romantic novels and glossy magazines would have you believe.

But sometimes  - it just isn’t.
And I hear you.

Sometimes . . . the overwhelm of dealing with all of these changes . . . and concerns you might have about yourself and your baby . . . as well as wondering how you might cope . . . and being fearful of the birth . . . whilst worrying about the ‘not knowing’ of how life will be in the future is just, well, . . . overwhelming.

You know, when you think about it . . .
Pregnancy is all about change.
Isn’t it?

You ~ Your body ~ Your responsibilities ~ Your relationships ~ Your friendships ~ Your self-image ~ Your money ~ Your job ~ Your time ~ Your focus . . .

. . . and I could go on, but I’m sure you get the drift!
And, probably could add a few of your own too!

Dark haired young woman sits in her kitchen with her head in her right hand. Her eyes are closed and her face looks sad as though deep in thought and anxiety

You see, being able to move through change can be really tricky when we're still niggled by old thought processes - especially those ones where we judge ourselves.

Those ‘not being enough’ sort of thoughts . . . you know what I mean?

Not ‘good’ enough, not ‘clever’ enough, not ‘beautiful’ enough, not ‘capable’ enough, not ‘loveable’ enough . . . and . . . ‘add your own words here’ enough.

These are, in fact, stories that we tell we ourselves.
And may well have done so (on repeat) for a very long time.
These thoughts or stories then become a belief - that we believe to be true.

All of these beliefs are so limiting (that’s why they’re called ‘self limiting beliefs’) and can really get in the way of you confidently moving into the next chapter in your life . . . where you becoming a mama.

I would imagine that this is definitely not what you’re wanting.

Particularly, as you stand on the edge of so much change, newness as well as a whole host of possibility.

But, just supposing it doesn’t have to be like this.

Because, in essence, it doesn’t.
There will always be possibilities to create a different outcome.

It’s, usually, that we just need help to see them.

SO . . . just for a moment, imagine how it might feel to express what's actually going on for you - in a non-judgemental space - where you can just share and unload some of your anxieties.

A space where you’re really heard.

And then to take some time exploring and working through any of your thoughts or beliefs that hold you back . . . probably limiting you in some way.

As you ‘shed’ these heavyweights - you’ll notice pretty quickly how much lighter you feel . . . which brings with it a clarity in your vision, a deeper sense of who you are and an increased confidence in your body to grow and birth your little one.

Then experiencing and embodying fantastic coping techniques that’ll serve you so well during your pregnancy, as you become a new mum - and in your ‘new’ life ahead.
